Undoubtedly the most famous producer in Alsace, Deiss' wines are highly sought after worldwide and even have their own exceptions in the AOC regulations. Winemaker Jean Michel Deiss has an unmistakable terroir philosophy. Assuming that a wine is made in the vineyard, he produces the most interesting wines of the region. The grape variety and intervention of the winemaker is of secondary importance in the production process. In some vineyards, sometimes as many as 13 grape varieties are planted interchangeably. Deiss, for example, is the only producer not to be legally restricted in the use of grape varieties not normally allowed in Grand Cru d'Alsace.
