Deiss is undoubtedly Alsace's most famous producer; its wines are highly sought after worldwide and even enjoy their own exceptions in the AOC regulations. Winemaker Jean Michel Deiss has an unmistakable terroir philosophy. Based on the premise that a wine is made in the vineyard, he produces the region's most interesting wines. The grape variety and the winemaker's intervention are of secondary importance in the production process. Some vineyards may have as many as 13 grape varieties planted together. For example, Deiss is the only producer not subject to legal restrictions regarding the use of grape varieties not normally permitted in Grand Cru d'Alsace.
