Winemaker

Johan Reyneke was the first South African winemaker to convert to a biodynamic system, a move he made at a time when it was, to put it mildly, unpopular. After years of being vilified, he is now known as one of South Africa's finest winemakers, with several of Reyneke's wines appearing in national and international top 10 lists of the country's highest-scoring vineyards. Johan, a philosopher by training, believes in artisanal winemaking. He rejects modern techniques for traditional methods and believes that vineyards without natural balance cannot produce good wine. Evidence for his approach? A study by the University of Stellenbosch revealed that Reyneke's vineyards contain an average of 900% (!) more soil life than his conventional neighbors!
