Miguel Merino, Gran Reserva MAGNUM 2019

This Gran Reserva comes from old vineyards dating back to the 1950s and 1960s and showcases the elegance of Rioja. The wine is refined and balanced, with ripe red fruit, subtle spice, a hint of tobacco, and delicate oak notes from its French oak aging. The tannins are silky, and the finish is long and fresh.

Perfect with lamb, slow-cooked stews, game, or a nice piece of ripe Manchego.

Winemaker

Miguel Merino is the second generation and is at the helm of this winery, known for its terroir-driven, refined wines, located in Briones, Rioja. His father, Miguel Merino Sr., was a pioneer in the internationalization of Spanish wine and founded the family's export company in the late 1980s. Miguel Jr. joined the family business for the first time in 2003 and studied oenology in La Rioja. After gaining experience at several other (well-known) wineries, Miguel Jr. returned home permanently in 2017 to work as a winemaker. The company comprises 14 hectares of vineyards spread across 39 plots in Briones.
Merino farms all its vineyards organically but is not certified, and no herbicides or pesticides are used. However, the effort and cost of certifying 39 different plots is currently unfeasible. They are very conscious of how they use their land and how to manage it as sustainably as possible.
In the wine cellar, minimal sulfites are used, keeping the total below 40 mg/L. The wine is clarified with a natural and vegan-friendly product, and only passes through a coarse/light filter to remove any sediment.
