Winemaker

Domaine Marcel Deiss is one of the finest producers in Alsace. The current owner and winemaker, Jean-Michel Deiss, strongly embraces a terroir philosophy. "The vineyard comes before the grape variety" is his firm belief. This is why, for example, grape varieties are planted together in various vineyards (complantation), as was once common. Deiss distinguishes between "wins de fruits" and "vins de terroirs." The former often refers to varietal wines that are exceptionally pure, highly concentrated, and clearly reflect the vintage. Terroir wines are regional, communal, or vineyard wines, where the wine is influenced much more by the terroir than by a grape variety. These wines are made from at least three grape varieties, but sometimes as many as 13. The wines can vary significantly between terroirs and vintages. The philosophy behind the winemaking is simple: intervene as little as possible so that the terroir can fully express itself. Deiss wines excel in precision, concentration, and a wonderfully smooth mouthfeel. Despite Jean-Michel's specific approach, the wines are not difficult to taste and are therefore widely appreciated.
