Domaine Begude, Chardonnay 'l'Etoile' 2022
French-style Chardonnay, nothing New World. Focus on stone fruit. Certainly not excessively thick. Elegance and refinement are the hallmarks here.
Begude's Chardonnay star shines bright! 100% organic and crafted in a cool corner near Limoux. A fresh style yet with plenty of personality and good balance. Don't expect Burgundy-style, but definitely a true French style with a hint of orange peel on the nose. Very lightly aged in oak, but you won't taste it, but it does add a touch of body. Creamy apple, pear, and orange fruit aromas with a subtle hint of baked bread. Fairly rich on the palate and definitely ready to drink.
Delicious as an aperitif, but also pairs well with chicken dishes, such as roast chicken with a herb filling. Fish is always a good idea. Ligurian-style, for example! With capers, parsley, and olives.

Domaine Begude is largely the creation of Englishman James Kinglake. His love for the noble Burgundian grapes, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, brought James to the hills around Limoux, south of Carcassonne, precisely because of the cooler climate there. James and his wife Catherine took over in 2003, and although the estate had previously been biodynamic, it was all a bit old-fashioned and neglected at the time. It certainly hadn't received the "tender loving care" it deserved over the years. There was a lot of work to be done. A hands-on approach, and it paid off very well. Slightly removed from the sweltering Languedoc, influenced by the cool Pyrenees and the Atlantic weather system, it is perfect for discreet "Old World" Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The growing conditions are similar to those in Burgundy, and indeed, 80% of the vineyard's production is Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The long, cool growing season here produces well-balanced, fruit-driven wines supported by a natural freshness.
