Winemaker

Located in Les Riceys in the Côte des Bar, the Alexandre Bonnet estate boasts a unique terroir: steep slopes with the renowned Kimmerdigian limestone soil—also found in Chablis and Sancerre. As throughout the Côte des Bar, the estate's plantings are primarily Pinot Noir (89%). The village of Les Riceys, where the estate is located, is primarily known for its distinctive still rosé wines.

Alexandre Bonnet started as a merchant (Négociant manipulant), buying grapes and wine to make Champagne. In recent years, they have focused more on quality and terroir expression. This has led to a line of Champagnes made exclusively from grapes grown on their own vineyards. The wines are predominantly made from Pinot Noir and have a low dosage, ranging from extra-brut to brut nature.

Côte des Bar is the largest subregion of the Champagne region, comprising over 20% of the total appellation. Only after the classification of Champagne in the early 20th century was the Côte des Bar recognized as a subregion of the Champagne region. The northerners (Montagne de Reims, Côte des Blancs) viewed the southerners (Côte de Bar) as outsiders, incapable of producing true Champagne. After demonstrations and riots, the Côte des Bar was admitted to the appellation, but did not enjoy the same prestige as the rest of the region—no Grand Crus or Premier Crus were designated. Today, the area is known for its high-quality Pinot Noir production and the microclimate conditions that ensure excellent grape ripening.

Fun fact: Les Riceys is the only commune (with three villages) in the entire Champagne region where the three AOCs overlap, namely: AOC Champagne, AOC Coteaux Champenoise, AOC Rosé des Riceys.
