Alegre Valgañón, Las Llanas 2018

DOCa Rioja

An original and serious white/orange wine with a complex, attractive, and elegant character. Made from Rojal (Malvasía Riojana), Viura, Garnacha Blanca, and Calagraño grapes, all harvested simultaneously and aged on the skins.

A white wine with a bright amber color, a strong nose of skins, with cider and citrus aromas of dried apricots and quince, spicy and slightly smoky. On the palate, it has a pleasant texture, a touch salty, with a long and intense finish.

The grapes come from a vineyard in Fonzaleche on horizontal sandstone soils that are very poor but still remain moist, all managed according to organic principles. This vineyard, perhaps over 100 years old, is one of those forgotten vineyards that no one cares about because they are expensive to work, but which Eva Valgañon works with love.

Winemaker

Since 2014, Oscar and his wife Eva have been making wine in the village of Sajazarra in the northwest of the Rioja region. It's a small bodega that focuses on the terroir and special vineyards of the Rioja region. They trace the winemaking traditions of the past, before the use of all American oak and the production of heavy wines. The couple works plot by plot, with an equal distribution of Tempranillo, Granacha, and Cariñena for reds and primarily Viura and Malvasia for whites. Most of the vineyards are located on steep slopes in the cooler regions of the Rioja region. Minimal intervention is used in the winemaking process, allowing the terroir and grape varieties to shine through.

Oskar has been learning from his good friend Telmo Rodriguez. Together, they fight for authentic Rioja.
